International Essay Competition 2006
organized by the Last Post Association
Title
"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them"
No doubt people will always remember them!
But HOW should their ultimate sacrifice for ever be remembered?
Describe the image of the World War 1 soldier that you think
should go down in history.
Eligibility
The essay competition is open to Year 12 and Year 13 New Zealand secondary
school pupils in Wellington and the Wairarapa.
Participants must be New Zealand citizens or New Zealand Permanent Residents.
The essay must be typed.
The essay must be 800 words at least.
The essays will be judged by a New Zealand panel and five essays will
be selected to be judged by the Belgian jury.
There will be only one winner. The winner will be invited by the Last
Post Association to Ieper, Belgium at an agreed time during 2007. Airfares
(Auckland/Brussels/Auckland), internal transport within Belgium, entry
into museums and other institutions that are part of the official programme,
and accommodation and meals while in Belgium will be paid.
The New Zealand winner will be announced at the Last Post Association’s
Prizegiving Ceremony in Ieper, Belgium, on Remembrance Day, 11 November
2006 (Belgium time). The winner will be informed by telephone at 8.00
am on 12 November 2006 (New Zealand time).
