Hew Strachan is Chichele Professor of the History of War and Fellow at All Soul's College, Oxford. He is also Director of Oxford Leverhulme Programme on the Changing Character of War, and was Professor of Modern History at the University of Glasgow prior to coming to Oxford in 2001. Professor Strachan's research focuses on military history from the 18th century to date, including contemporary strategic studies, but with particular interest in the First World War and in the history of the British Army. He is the author of several highly acclaimed books on military history, including The First World War: Volume 1: To Arms (2001) which was also produced as a multi-part documentary series for television. Professor Strachan is currently visiting New Zealand as the Sir Howard Kippenberger Chair in Strategic Studies at Victoria University of Wellington, funded by the Weston Foundation, New Zealand Defence Froce and the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services' Association.
