Women's World

ladies cutting cake   women by truck
In June 2003, the Levin RSA Women's Section celebrated their 50th birthday. At the celebration five long Service certificates were awarded, and two Life Memberships. Seen here cutting the celebratory cake are Josie Taylor, Phyl Donnelly and June Fletcher.   Looking Back: discovered recently amongst his mother's effects by Albert Larsen, was this photo taken in 1942 at Wellington. It shows a group of NZ women who were carrying out truck driving duties for the US Marine Corps. Albert's Aunty Zelma Sowry is the one sitting on the mudguard with hands in her lap. Albert wonder's if any others in the photo are still alive. The RSA Review holds a copy of the photograph which can be passed on if requested.

Seen here from the left are: Jessie Drummind, Bette Stone, Nell Reed, President, Women's Section, Bill Hunter, Vice President Motueka RSA, Christine Moreton, and Merle Eyles.

Upper Hutt Ladies Say Farewell

In Late June 2003, the Women’s Section of the Upper Hutt RSA called it a day.

Faced with an ageing membership, with the youngest of the Women being in their 60s, it was decided to wind up the section which has been going for many years.

The KEV ladies in the local area will take on the traditional tasks carried out by the Women’s Section. There are approximately 50 members of this group and they meet regularly. These important duties include making of poppies for the annual poppy day, and rosemary sprays for laying on the service graves at Akatarawa cemetery.

The Women’s Section had five life members.

“It’s a sad end of an era but just one of those things.” Gwen Anderson, President of the Women’s Section told a local newspaper as they finished up.

The funds held by the Women’s Section have been passed over to the Upper Hutt RSA Welfare Fund.
